Spring time at Wynndean…

All of the Wynndean team are looking forward to seeing many of you during the coming months at the park and enjoying some of this beautiful sunshine. Here are some snippets of Park activity over the last few months.

New Outdoor Mud Kitchen

We love seeing our families enjoying the outdoor environment so these school holidays you will notice a new Outdoor Kids Mud Kitchen at Wynndean. Fenced off in a safe and secure area for busy little people, the area has a gorgeous dry river bed, bridge, outdoor mud kitchen with pots and pans and a beautiful timber table for “big kids” to relax and enjoy the outdoors. The new space is located in the Desert area at Wynndean (scroll down to the end of this newsletter to see the meaning behind this nickname!)
We hope you all enjoy this new space.

Road Sealing

The roads have been making speedy progress around Wynndean. Sealing is due to take place in the coming month. We will keep all guests updated on dates and changes to road access and conditions through emails, social media and the office notice board. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

We remind guests to be mindful of heavy vehicles and moving machinery and take care while crossing the roads. All sites will be accessible however, entry routes may change on a day to day basis.

The blue and orange flags will remain up until the completion of the roads. These flags are here to protect the trees and vegetation on the roadsides.

History- Celebrating 75 years!

Thanks to some feedback from a Wynndean guest, we’ve included a snippet of our almost 75 year history here at Wynndean. We appreciate and value your feedback so if you have any suggestions to be included in our newsletter, please feel free to let us know.

In following on the road sealing, we thought we would share how some of the original roads around Wynndean were formed and let’s just say if you think the current process is tedious and time consuming wait to you read some of these stories!

As retold by John Wynn, he and the Wynn family lead by Jack, formed the original Esplanade, Field, Osbourne and Baker Street roads by hand with a wheel barrow, followed by a horse and scoop and eventually a second hand bulldozer and hand-operated grader. The sand hills made it almost impossible to get any machinery or vehicular access into the area and with war time rationing, any machinery would have been very difficult to purchase. So sand was originally moved by hand in a wheel barrow.

Jack also purchased an old Bren Gun Carrier in an attempt to use as a bulldozer for levelling but had limited success. A local man also offered his horse and dray where clay was shovelled from the Ocean Grove lookout into the dray and hand spread. Eventually, an old bulldozer was purchased from the Forestry Commission for 300 pounds as well as a hand operated grader. Jack was provided with a 44 gallon drum of diesel as payment from the local council and foreshore committee to continue this work along Field Street.

The bulldozer purchased from the Forestry Commission for 300 pounds forming the Esplanade Road, Ocean Grove.

With the roads formed, Jack then used truckloads of “breeze” from the gas works at Queenscliff to seal the sand. Breeze is the bi-product of solid ash from the coal/coke burning process at the gas works.

The local council and foreshore committee then provided a chain driven front end loader. Together with Jack (and a young John Wynn), the men would collect clay from the Ocean Grove lookout and load it into trucks. The trucks were driven at full speed in second gear into the sand hills, the clay was offloaded and the bulldozer would then push the truck out ready for the next load. This would form Surf Beach Road, Ocean Grove- pictured below. As a result of the clay removal, a road was also formed which linked the Surf Beach Road and Smith’s Beach at Hodgson Street (the current dog beach).

Finally, the roads around Wynndean were sealed by Jack in the 1950’s from drums of tar from the gas works at Queenscliff and were transported with the Wynndean Chev truck. A tap would run from the drum into a copper pipe where a fire would heat the tar. The tar would then flow into a galvanized iron watering can and Jack and his sons would spread the warm tar by hand and then finish with sprinkled blue metal 1/4 minors screenings.

Concrete footpaths throughout Wynndean were also made from breeze, cement and sand with old cast iron bed heads used for reinforcing.

These roads and paths gave access to the beach for many locals and holidaying families.
An amazing history right under our feet! Stay tuned for our next history snippet and thanks John for recalling these great stories ;)

House Keeping with Electricity

We have had a few incidences where guests’ power has been turned on or off in meterboxes. While we do recommend all power is turned off at the metrebox and the caravan circuit breaker when you leave your site, some guests do choose to leave their power on. Please be mindful of not turning anyone else’s power on or off at the meterbox. Adjusting someone else’s power can significantly impact their electricity usage and the state of their caravan. Thank you.

The Dunes and Ocean Grove Surf Life Club Opening

It’s great to see the opening of the Dunes and OGSLC. The building is certainly impressive.
Hopefully we can all enjoy an ice cream or a coffee sometime there soon!

Tell us what you think of your experience there!
